Your Guide to Seasonal Living: How to Embrace Spring in Body, Mind, and Soul
At Primally Pure, our deepest roots lie in mindful choices – both for the health of ourselves and our planet. So, as seasons shift and our body’s needs follow suit, we return to the innate connection of soil and skin. In this, we find the power of seasonal living.
Living in tune with nature and its seasons provides a unique opportunity to dial in.
When we connect with the earth, we connect with ourselves.
Whether you enjoy change or feel anxiety over the unknown, the arrival of a fresh season has a lot to teach us if we’re willing to listen. This dynamic shift is a sign to pause inward for a beat and consider what the new season is ushering in.
To us, spring is an invitation for new opportunities to embrace cyclical living. It’s a time to…
→ Prioritize seasonal produce designed to nourish your body.
→ Detox + replenish your skin as temps and humidity rise.
→ Find lightness + refreshment in this season of cyclical living.
So, as we bid farewell to winter and experience the fresh spring season, let’s embrace it with open arms – and minds. Spring is the perfect opportunity to reset our intentions, reconnect with our planet, and sync up with the innate rhythms of life.
Let’s consider how we can slow down, expand, and nourish ourselves as the tides inevitably change.
Let’s learn to live like spring.
Find Nourishment Through Seasonal Eating
One of the best ways to practice cyclical and seasonal living? Eating with the seasons.
As a holistic skincare company, we believe nutrition is essential for your internal and external body. What better way to embrace cyclical living and the earth’s rhythms than to eat seasonally – appreciating what’s available in abundance right here + now?
Benefits of Seasonal Eating
In some parts of the world, seasonal eating is just a natural, undisputed way of life. With so many expendable resources, our culture has become quite extravagant (+ wasteful) with our food habits. If that resonates with you, it’s okay – it’s so common in today’s world that many of us don’t realize it.
But check out all these benefits you can experience with seasonal eating.
→ Flavors are richer + nutrients are more abundant
It just makes sense! Food grown during the current seasons and in the right conditions thrives compared to food forced to grow in an unnatural environment + climate. The result of seasonal eating: more nutrient-dense food and superior flavor.
→ Food becomes a more sacred + intentional experience
When you practice seasonal living through your meals, you’ll only partake in certain foods at specific times during the year. This means seasonal produce and recipes become a valued tradition to look forward to and savor.
→ It helps support sustainability and a healthier planet
When crops are grown + harvested within the appropriate seasons, the land thrives, too, contributing to better soil health and carbon capture.
→ Seasonal produce has beneficial nutrients tailored to the specific season
Many fruits and vegetables have particular properties that specifically benefit us during the spring season when our bodies need to detox + replenish.
If it isn’t obvious by now, the earth is designed to support our bodies through cyclical living. Seasonal eating is part of that design. ;)
Detox + Replenish With Spring Produce
While winter brings many rich and savory foods, you’ll find seasonal eating in spring introduces lighter, brighter, and crisp foods. This aligns with the classic “spring cleaning” concept. The earth innately supports our body’s need to lighten our load + detox after a long, stagnant winter.
After many months spent (mostly) indoors, moving and sweating less, it makes sense your body would need to detox. We also know that the air quality is lower inside due to a higher concentration of pollutants.1 Depending on where you live, spending time outside during winter may be extremely sparse.
Supporting the theme of detox and renewal, we find many spring fruits and vegetables contain essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals like:
- Antioxidants – help repair oxidative stress throughout the body and skin, protecting against environmental toxins and signs of premature aging.
- Phytonutrients – support detoxification through multiple mechanisms.2
- Vitamin C – boosts immunity and is critical for collagen production and wound healing (aka, skin renewal).3
- Vitamin A – a powerhouse for skin, eye, and reproductive health.
- Vitamin K – assists in healthy blood sugar levels, which supports graceful aging and glowing skin.4
- Iron – can support a healthy glow and improve wound healing.5,6
- Fiber – helps improve gut health by cleansing the digestive system.
And this isn’t even an extensive look at all the nutrients in spring foods + what they can provide! For instance, Vitamin K also improves the elasticity of blood vessels, improving rosacea and other skin conditions. It even effectively treats dark under eyes and boosts collagen production. It can even help minimize menstrual cramps.
With produce full of immune-supportive and cleansing properties, seasonal eating complements a healthy lifestyle (+ clean skincare) perfectly. You benefit from the specific nutrients and a wide array of general anti-inflammatory benefits.
In-Season Produce for Spring
Here are some of the most common in-season produce you can look for this spring. (Keep in mind this list could vary depending on where you live. If you’re not sure what’s seasonal to your location, check with a local farm or vendor at your local farmer’s market.)
- Artichokes
- Asparagus
- Berries (especially strawberries)
- Peas
- Radishes
- Fava Beans (rich in minerals)
- Snap peas
- Arugula
- Swiss chard
- Radishes
- Avocados
- Rhubarb
- Carrots
- Herbs like cilantro, mint, and basil
- Lettuces
- Grapefruits
- Lemons
Seasonal eating is more than beneficial to your overall health. It’s a refreshing way to get outside of your normal routines with cooking, trying something new, and deeply nourishing your body with just what it needs.
But seasonal living is about more than just what you put IN your body – it’s equally as important what you put ON your body. ;)
Seasonal Skincare Choices
In the same way we speak about cyclical skincare and cyclical exercise, we also want to encourage our community to consider cyclical living by paralleling the seasons with your skin care.
Everything is changing around us – including your skin + its needs.
The best part is we have our very own guidebook right at our fingertips. As you parallel nature’s rhythms, you intuitively support your skin’s needs through seasonal skincare!
Here are a few key tips to keep in mind with seasonal skin care during spring:
- Prioritize sun protective nutrients since you’ll likely have more sun exposure as temps warm up + the sun comes out a little brighter. (Check out astaxanthin!)
- Be mindful of your skin state as your skin is exposed to evolving temperatures, humidity, and more. Your skin’s needs are also shifting, and you may need to switch up your skin-specific products. (If you’re not sure what you need, check out our skin state quiz!)
- Choose clean, non-toxic skincare products that support your body’s detoxing abilities instead of adding to your toxic load. As your body is detoxing and adjusting to the spring season, you’ll want to support it in the most foundational way: clean ingredients.
With the arrival of spring, and keeping seasonal living in mind, your skin needs two main focuses: renewal and detox.
Skin Remedies to Try This Spring
In alignment with the need to detox + replenish, here are some easy at-home skin remedies we love for spring. These are tried and true ways to clear out the old, and make way for the new.
- Dry Brushing – supports detox throughout your body by activating your lymphatic system. It also sloughs off dead skin cells and dry, flakey skin to reveal a softer, more radiant complexion.
- Facial Mists – replenishes + provides optimal hydration. Enhance your skin’s protective barrier with the duo of oil and water. Layer facial mists with your oil-based balms or creams to create even more potent nourishment and restorative moisture beneath the surface.
- Facial Masks – raw honey + mineral-rich clays nudge along cellular renewal, refine skin texture, and replenish skin. It’s like all things spring in a skincare product. ;)
Your skin needs may vary depending on where you live. Seasonal living is all about embracing the season where YOU live, regardless of what that looks like. Our product line is full of non-toxic skincare that provides detox and replenishment to support your skin goals all season long.
So, listen to your skin and embrace the seasonal skincare that best fits your needs. (Or, take our skin state quiz to get a customized suggestion.)
Embrace More Time Outdoors
One of the best ways to live like spring? Get outside!
After being cooped up inside for winter, there’s a good chance you’ll suddenly find yourself spending more time outside – surrounded by nature’s bounty of green blossoms and the end of a long hibernation.
The natural pull you feel to be outside more = embracing seasonal living at its best!
The power of nature for health + well-being is widely known throughout the holistic health world. (Plus, don’t you just feel better when you’re outside?!) Being outside more boosts positivity and morale. Science even shows us that intentional time spent outdoors surrounded by nature’s sights, sounds, and smells soothes your nervous system.
Here are a few ways to embrace more time outdoors this spring:
- Forest bathing – we love the concept of “bathing” outdoors. And no, it doesn’t include actual bathing. It’s the concept of figuratively “soaking up” everything nature has to offer and letting it calm your mind + soul.
- Grounding/Earthing – the practice of placing your feet (or body) on the earth’s surface detoxes your body from the overflow of positively charged electrons that technology surrounds us with. Making time for earthing is especially significant in a world where technology (+ work) often keeps us inside.
- Get more sun – we touched on this already with skin care, but seasonal living includes more time in the sun during spring! Basking in the morning sun boosts your vitamin D intake, improves your mood, and provides a dose of fresh air that’s much cleaner than indoors.
Allergy Remedies for Spring
For those in our community who struggle with seasonal allergies, we see you. With more time spent outside, allergy relief is an important topic to touch on with seasonal living.
Unfortunately, spring delivers some of the worst offenders when it comes to allergies (pollen-covered everything – ugh!). But there are plenty of ways to be proactive + provide relief from any allergies you might personally experience during spring.
Here are a few of our best tips for allergy defense:
- Local bee pollen and honey – consuming local bee pollen or honey has been shown to support allergies. It’s best to source locally to protect against the specific allergens in your area being pollinated.
- An anti-inflammatory diet – since the immune system spurs allergic reactions, you can support its response through diet. Load your plate full of organic superfoods with healthy fats, proteins, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
- Natural histamine support – a few different types of natural histamine support work with your body’s immune response instead of blocking histamine receptors. Some find that quercetin works well, while others use a blend called d-hist. (Our founder Bethany loves this histamine supplement – she says it’s the only thing that’s ever really worked for her!)
- Anti-histamine diet – foods high in histamine will increase your chances of allergic reactions to seasonal exposures. If you need additional allergy support, this could be a good option combined with other natural allergy remedies.
- Manual sinus rinses – manually rinsing your sinus with a saline solution or neti pot can do wonders for clearing out mucus buildup. (Our founder Bethany recommends this one.)
- Work on your gut health – since most of your immune system resides in your gut, a healthy gut can be beneficial to ward off foreign allergens and environmental toxins.
- Shower steamers – our Eucalyptus and Bergamot Shower Steamers are a superior (+ luxurious) way to clear your sinuses and airways.
- Mold prevention/detox – mold buildup in your house can cause or add to seasonal allergies and create a plethora of health issues. (Check out our post on mold prevention for more info.)
(Check out our full post on natural allergy remedies here.)
Even if you have allergies, you deserve all the time you want outside. So, if you feel drawn to spend more time soaking up the sun + greenery, listen to your body! Seasonal living ebbs and flows. As winter’s slowness resigns, let’s welcome a new desire for connection to the earth and fresh movement + exploration.
Get outside and explore – release your inner child!
A Prompt for Seasonal Living
With the return of spring comes a feeling of lightness. We sense change is coming, and it’s more important than ever to pause and notice the small things.
To find life’s best + most precious silver linings.
So, let’s go inwards before blossoming. In gratitude, we challenge you to consider:
What does living like spring look like for you? How can you embody this mantra?
Grab a journal and pen, and let your thoughts flow freely.
→ As we move forward into warmer temperatures, outdoor gatherings, and new beginnings, where are you setting your intentions?
Pause to consider how you can embrace seasonal living in this moment.
→ What challenges await you this season?
→ How can you nourish yourself to handle the tides of change?
→ What seeds have you planted with intention that you’re excited to watch bloom?
In reverence for spring – and all things new.
