The Kind of Hive Mind We’re Here For
There’s something just so grounding about ingredients that have been trusted for thousands of years.
Honey that preserves itself indefinitely. A resin so antimicrobial that it sterilizes an entire hive. A secretion that transforms a genetically identical larva into a queen who lives forty times longer. Beeswax that has protected skin since ancient Egypt.
These bee products are some of the most sophisticated materials nature has ever produced! And the sourcing story behind the bee ingredients we use in many of our products (including our new Jelly to Milk Cleanser!) is one we are really proud to share.
Let’s take a look at the fascinating science behind honey, propolis, royal jelly, and beeswax.
The Hive as a Skincare System
|
Quick Summary
|
When we look at bee-based skincare benefits through an ancestral wisdom lens (which you know we are all about here at Primally Pure!), the relationship between humans and bees becomes one of the oldest in history. Ancient Egyptians used honey in wound care and beauty rituals. Traditional medicine practices across cultures have incorporated propolis as an antimicrobial for a very long time.
These uses emerged from thousands of years of observation of some of nature’s most complex compounds.
And what we’ve found over time is that the treasures bees make are not as simple as they seem! Each ingredient carries its own purpose inside the hive, and those purposes translate beautifully to our skin.
→ Honey preserves and heals
→ Propolis protects against pathogens
→ Royal jelly drives cellular renewal
→ Beeswax creates a gentle, protective barrier
Together, these all form a natural skincare system that was perfect long before we had the words to explain it.
And a system this incredible deserves to be sourced with just as much care. So let’s talk about sourcing, because this subject is near and dear to our hearts.
Responsibly managed bees naturally make more honey, propolis, and royal jelly than any hive could ever use in its lifetime.
When experienced beekeepers collect only that surplus, colonies stay healthy and strong.
And healthy hives matter — for way more than just skincare! Bees pollinate the wild plants and food crops that our entire ecosystem relies on. When done with care, this relationship benefits both sides. Bees get protection and support from experienced beekeepers and in return, we benefit from receiving the surplus of their natural creations.
Propolis: The Hive’s Immune System
|
Quick Summary
|
Propolis is sometimes called “bee glue,” which is true but this name massively undersells how truly incredible it is!
It’s a resinous compound honeybees gather from tree buds, bark, and botanical sap flows. They then combine it with their own enzymes and beeswax to create one of the most chemically complex substances found anywhere in nature!
Inside the hive, the job of propolis is to seal every little gap, coat every surface, and keep the whole place clean and protected from bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
Researchers have identified hundreds of compounds within propolis, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids. 1All the compounds have documented antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties!
Part of what makes propolis so effective is that it doesn’t attack bacteria in just one way. It comes at them from several angles at once. Research shows it 2:
- Interferes with how bacteria build their protective outer wall
- Damages bacterial membranes directly
- Breaks down the sticky, shield-like protective layer bacteria can form together that make many skin infections so stubborn and hard to clear
- It’s this multi-pronged approach that makes propolis so hard for bacteria to outsmart.
And our skin gets to benefit from all of it.
Propolis:
→ Calms inflammation
→ Discourages acne-causing bacteria
→ Offers antioxidant protection against everyday environmental stress
What makes propolis so hard to replicate is that (like we mentioned earlier), it’s hundreds of compounds working together in harmony. That’s something that no lab has managed to replicate!

Royal Jelly: The Queen’s Secret
|
Quick Summary
|
Okay here’s something we find magical: every larva in a hive starts out exactly the same. Same genes, same potential.
What turns one into a worker bee and another into a queen who lives forty times longer is not genetics, but instead is what she’s fed!
Workers get royal jelly for the first few days of life, while the queen gets it for her entire life. That one small dietary difference is what produces two completely different creatures from the same genetic blueprint!
If royal jelly is powerful enough to do that, imagine what it can do for skin!
The star of the show with royal jelly is 10-HDA (10-hydroxy 2-decenoic acid). This unique fatty acid can’t be found anywhere else on earth.
And research has pinpointed 10-HDA as the compound responsible for royal jelly’s collagen-boosting activity. 3
Studies also show that 10-HDA protects against UVA-related damage, quieting the gene expression that’s linked to photoaging after sun exposure. 4
But royal jelly doesn’t stop there! Additional research points to royal jelly’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, too. 5
That’s what makes this bee creation so special. It gives us something that exists nowhere else on earth.

Honey: Going Deeper Than Ever
|
Quick Summary
|
We’ve written about honey before (you can find that full deep dive here if you haven’t already!), but there’s something worth revisiting again and again: raw versus processed.
Raw honey, never heated, holds onto the full complexity of its natural compounds:
- Enzymes
- Amino acids
- B vitamins
- Antioxidant-rich flavonoids
- Hydrogen peroxide
And its antimicrobial benefits aren’t minor, either.
Studies show raw honey works against a range of pathogens, including some that no longer respond well to conventional antibiotics! 6 This is part of why honey is such a perfect fit for acne-prone or reactive skin.
But heating honey (even just a little) destroys the enzymes and breaks down the bioactive compounds that make it so special.
Unfortunately, most honey used in conventional skincare has already been processed and heated for consistency and shelf life. The result is more like a simple humectant rather than the rich and powerful raw honey.
We take great pride in the honey we use in our products. It’s never heated. It arrives on our doorstep exactly as the bees made it, and we keep it pure in all of our formulations.
(We’ll share below more about where we source our honey from, under the What Ethical Sourcing Looks Like section!)

Beeswax: The Original Barrier Ingredient
|
Quick Summary
|
Beeswax is made entirely by the bees. Young worker bees secrete it from glands on their abdomens and use it to build the honeycomb, which is the foundation of everything that happens inside a hive.
On skin, it works its magic as a gentle occlusive, forming a breathable, protective layer that slows moisture loss without ever clogging pores.
But there’s more to beeswax than how it feels on your skin.
Research shows beeswax has antimicrobial power against several common types of bacteria. 7 And studies confirm that beeswax-based formulas help skin hold onto moisture (gently) while supporting the barrier that keeps your skin hydrated and protected! 8
This is exactly why we’ve never been drawn to the petroleum jelly slugging trend. Petrolatum works by the same basic occlusive idea that beeswax does, but it’s a petroleum derivative that sits on the skin without giving anything back.
So, when formulating our facial balms, we instead leaned into beeswax. The Everything Balm and Antioxidant Balm do the same overnight sealing job of petroleum derivative products like Vaseline, minus the toxic petroleum (huge bonus), plus much more real benefit to your skin!
Beeswax adds a layer of natural antimicrobial support all on its own. And, when combined with the tallow, botanical oils, and antioxidants in our balms, you get all the moisture-locking power of slugging with ingredients that actually do something for your skin while you sleep!
If the slugging trend has ever piqued your interest, we’d love for you to try our balms instead. They’re a beautiful place to start!
P.S. Beeswax is also a powerful purifier for your home! We mindfully formulate our non-toxic candles with a base of beeswax instead of paraffin (created from petroleum) for a clean burn and to release beneficial negative ions into your home to detoxify your indoor air.

What Ethical Sourcing Looks Like
|
Quick Summary
|
What does responsible sourcing look like? For us, it starts with knowing our beekeepers.
The honey we use in our products comes from a family-run beekeeping operation in Temecula, California (not far from our HQ!). Their bees aren’t trucked across the country for large-scale pollination contracts the way so much commercial honey is.
These bees stay put and forage within a 2-3 mile radius of their own hives, which means a beautiful blend of everything growing in the surrounding Southern California landscape: olive groves, vineyards, avocados, and native Mediterranean-climate plants.
The fact that these bees tend the same land season after season matters. It means the honey they create (and we get to use the surplus of) is a genuine reflection of one place, cared for by people who know, respect, and love their bees.
It’s a relationship we are so proud of, and one that carries through into every Primally Pure bee-based formula built around it.
How All These Ingredients Come Together in Our Jelly to Milk Cleanser
|
Quick Summary
|
Our new Jelly to Milk Cleanser brings together everything we’ve been talking about (raw local honey, propolis extract, and royal jelly extract) in a gel-to-milk texture made for gentle, barrier-respecting cleansing.
→ Raw honey works as a humectant and gentle antimicrobial, keeping the formula aligned with your skin’s natural microbiome while also supporting hydration with every cleanse.
→ Propolis extract brings anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial support, making this cleanser especially gentle on reactive or congestive-prone skin.
→ Royal jelly extract adds its beautifully unique regenerative properties to a cleanser that’s designed to do so much more than just clean!
And the base of this formula is where our jojoba sourcing story really shines. Our supplier is a single organic and Regenerative Organic Certified farm in the Sonoran Desert, right in jojoba’s native habitat.
This plant needs little to no irrigation once established, no pesticides (at all!), and it doesn’t require tilling or replanting for decades at a time. It’s grown, harvested, and pressed on the very same farm before coming straight to us.
Here’s a little fun fact: jojoba isn’t technically an oil! It’s a liquid wax ester, the only one produced commercially by any plant. Its close resemblance to human sebum is part of what makes it absorb so well and resist oxidation the way other plant oils can’t.
And beyond honey, propolis, royal jelly, and jojoba, the Jelly to Milk formula includes several more cold-pressed oils that each bring their own supporting gifts to the table. This is a formula with real depth to it.

From the Hive, With Care
As it turns out, the most sophisticated skincare system we know of wasn’t designed in a lab. It was designed in a hive by nature, over millions of years.
Talk about humbling!
That’s why we honor these ingredients by keeping them raw, minimally processed, ethically harvested, and always with great respect for the creatures and ecosystems that make them available to us.
We’re so grateful to be able to incorporate these magical ingredients in our products for you to enjoy, and even more grateful to the bees.
