6 Beauty Tools To Transform Skin Holistically (Self Health Series Part 1)

by Courtney O'Connor

Self-care, self-love, self-help: some of the trendiest terms in today’s culture. These philosophies have become increasingly popular and taken our society by storm - while anxiety, burn out and stress-induced sickness have similarly followed suit.

We wonder if the definitions of these mindsets have become distorted and their meaning diluted. So we’ve decided to put a new spin on these “self-” focused phrases and take a different approach to wellness, this season especially.

The approach: Self-health.
The purpose: To optimize personal wellness to pour into the lives of others.

If we neglect self-health or, on the flip side, overemphasize it, it impacts our ability to be fully present for the people around us and the purpose we’ve been created for. Whether it’s from exhaustion and burnout by not considering our health needs or by being overly obsessed with self and lacking consideration for others.

Self-health is investing in your health (mind, body and spirit) for the sake of being the most alive, vibrant and present version of yourself for those you love.

Some seasons, self-health looks different. If you have 2 kiddos under 2, oil cleansing before bed and getting outside for a stroller walk every day could be the extent of your self-health practices. If you live alone and have a little extra time to yourself, your self-health practices could consist of a daily gua sha ritual and a full morning yoga flow. Give yourself grace for the season you’re in and prioritize the self-health practices that serve you and your schedule - for the sake of showing up for those around you.

Today, we can't wait to share the top tools and tips that not only promote a healthy, glowing complexion but also create a ripple effect that positively impacts your body, mind and soul, too.

Gua Sha: Get Glowing + Grounded

A calmer mind and clearer skin? Done. This simple tool deserves a spot in your daily skincare (aka self-health!) routine. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, gua sha not only optimizes lymphatic drainage and microcirculation for a brighter, firmer complexion and increased sense of wellness, but it powerfully supports stress levels.

Its rhythmic, repetitive massage motions help to sedate the sympathetic nervous system (our fight/flight response – which is active all too often in our culture today) and tap into the parasympathetic nervous system (rest/digest) while simultaneously releasing muscle tension + tightness. A regular gua sha practice allows the body and mind to enter a state of relaxation and focus on reparative functions to restore overall well-being, inside and out.

Stay tuned for a brand new gua sha tool with an advanced shape containing even more edges, angles and curves (and therapeutic properties) to enhance your ritual - and results.

Red Light Therapy: Help Heal Holistically

Next we're turning to the power of light to promote self-health, holistically. Proven to have a positive impact on the skin, body, mind and mood, infrared rays support rejuvenation and detoxification at a cellular level. Natural and non-invasive, these invisible rays harness the beneficial properties of the sun (without the harmful effects of UV rays) and are able to penetrate tissue to increase the body's core temperature which in turn stimulates circulation and creates a ripple effect to get lymphatic fluid flowing.

Soaking in infrared light on a regular basis (for about 10-20 minutes a few times a week) helps to restore immunity, expedite healing, increase relaxation + nervous system support, help balance hormones and boost your mind and mindset! Plus it evens skin tone, calms inflammation, promotes a more youthful appearance and leaves your complexion seriously glowing. What can't red light do? ;)

Ridged Facial Roller: Boost Beauty + Well-Being

This tool and technique is a bit more simple than gua sha, but still provides similar benefits (and a much-needed boost!) for your skin health. Facial rolling doesn’t require tons of time or expertise, so this is the perfect tool if you’re tight on time, need a quick morning pick-me-up or are a mama who’s got her hands full. And with the properties of the precious gemstones (rich in trace elements and energetic benefits), you’re getting even more holistic benefits by promoting emotional and mental well-being.

Plus these Ridged Facial Rollers pack a one-two punch: the roller end has ridges to stimulate even more circulation, collagen production and lymphatic flow and the end of the handle is rounded to focus on targeted acupressure points to rejuvenate skin + self from within. P.S. For an added self-health boost, keep your facial roller in the fridge!

Lymphatic Paddle: Promote Flow in Body + Mind

This is one self-health practice you’ll definitely want to try asap for benefits that you’ll experience immediately – in body, mind and soul. Gentle massage movements with a wooden lymphatic paddle helps to awaken the lymphatic system, detoxify skin tissue and deeply support the nervous system.

The intentional shape of this tool along with light massage motions following the pathways of lymphatic flow on the body makes you feel like you just had a massage – but from home! This is such a powerful way to promote drainage, release toxins and visibly improve the appearance of skin while also working wonders in releasing fascia, loosening connective tissue, easing tension and clearing blockages to support healthy flow in body and soul.

Dry Brushing: Detox + Brighten

Dry brushing has found its home among so many diverse cultures across the planet as a vital part of supporting health by removing stagnant waste from the body to promote optimal vitality and longevity. It's one of the best ways to activate the lymphatic system which is responsible for recycling nutrients back into the bloodstream, filtering out waste and harmful substances, sustaining immunity and maintaining homeostasis. A simple tool with big self-health benefits!

Plus a daily dry brushing routine offers double the benefits for brightening the skin by lightly exfoliating and sloughing off dead skin cells on the surface (and stimulating blood flow below the surface) to create a more clear, even and soft complexion, naturally. Now you know why this traditional detoxification ritual, simple skincare tool and 2-minute beauty hack has become one of our favorite self-health practices!

Hands: Tune In To Your Skin + Soul

Nothing compares to the healing power of touch and your hands make the perfect self-health tool to support your skin and overall sense of well-being. Even if you haven’t tried all of the facial tools above quite yet, you’ve still got everything you need to support self-health on a deep, cellular (and soul) level.

Facial massage wakes up circulation and lymphatic flow, melts away stress and can even help release stagnant emotions stored in our muscles leading to calmer, clearer skin and spirit. This skin-to-skin contact allows your fingers to actually feel texture and temperature along with areas of tension and tune in to what your skin is saying - and in turn, help you tune in to what you might be feeling more than skin deep.

Your personal touch helps to determine your skin’s needs and, even more importantly, helps you slow down and move in a more mindful and present way -which can extend from just your skincare routine to how you interact and engage with others around you. Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that have the most profound impact – and our hands are no exception.

To sum it all up, self-health is investing in yourself for the purpose of impacting the future. For the sake of longevity, of legacy.

From a simple skincare tool and taking a couple extra minutes to tune in to your what your skin (and soul) are saying to cultivating daily habits and practices (stay tuned for self-health habits next week!), it's the simple tools and little tweaks to our day to day that create a deeper sense of well-being that inevitably overflows to others.

Whatever we choose to call the time we take to invest in our self-health, may the purpose remain the same: to show up for ourselves, our families, our coworkers, our communities, and the world around us more rested, more present, more full.
