For the Sensitive + Rash-Prone: This Baking Soda Free Deodorant Actually Works
Summary
Switching to natural deodorant can feel like an endless hunt.
You think you’ve found the right one… only for irritation, redness, or rashes to return.
Even baking soda-free deodorants leave you wondering if any natural deodorant really works.
We get it. Switching to a non-toxic deodorant is an essential swap for your health, but finding one that’s gentle and effective isn’t always easy. That’s why we’re breaking down the importance of natural deodorant, the role baking soda plays in most formulas, and what sets our deodorant apart.
Plus, we’re debuting our newly formulated Baking Soda Free Deodorant. This one is for the weary customers who’ve tried alllll the natural deodorants but never found their perfect match – until now. ;)
Why Natural Deodorant Is Essential
There’s a lot more to deodorant than simply masking odor or eliminating sweat. Despite the common narratives in today’s culture, sweat is healthy. In fact, sweating is essential for overall health.
Unfortunately, many deodorants and antiperspirants completely block the function of sweat by physically clogging pores. Not to mention, many toxic ingredients are applied to super absorbent underarms, right next to prominent lymph nodes and breast tissue. These can include:
- Synthetic fragrances (with over 3,500 different chemicals)1
- Aluminum, which has been linked to degenerative disease2
- GMO ingredients, often treated with toxic herbicides and lower in nutrient density
- Endocrine disruptors + carcinogenic toxins, which affect hormone health
- Chemical propellants used in aerosol deodorants
- Frequently contaminated ingredients like petroleum derivatives and talc
On the flip side, studies have shown that reducing exposure to certain chemicals and toxins in personal care products can even reverse precancerous changes in breast tissue!3
So instead of stifling this essential detox pathway with chemical-laden deodorant, you want to allow your body to sweat. This natural, built-in function is crucial for overall wellness, including:
-
Regulating temperature – gradually cooling you down when your body temperature rises too high
-
Toxin release + lymphatic health – sweat directly eliminates plasticizers, endocrine disruptors, and heavy metals. It also encourages lymphatic flow, which supports overall detox and immune function. 4,5,6
-
Maintaining healthy skin – sweat pushes debris to the surface of your skin. This, in turn, boosts skin clarity – aka: less inflammation, blemishes, and breakouts.
Deodorant isn’t just another product – it’s something you apply daily to one of the most sensitive areas of your body. That’s why switching to a truly non-toxic formula isn’t optional – it’s essential, and the best first step toward a cleaner lifestyle.
*Note: Even “natural” deodorants can sneak in harmful chemicals. Marketing tactics are often used to make them seem cleaner than they actually are. So the best way to know is to check the label. If you’re new to this swap, here’s a guide to help you spot the hidden toxins on labels. ;)
We’ve now covered why non-toxic deodorant is such an essential swap. Next, let's tackle the most talked-about ingredient in natural deodorant: baking soda.
Why Baking Soda Is So Popular In Natural Deodorant
Baking soda often gets a bad reputation because some people experience irritation, redness, or rashes. And yet, baking soda remains a staple in many natural deodorants.
Because the truth is, baking soda works really well.
When formulated and sourced correctly in a natural deodorant, baking soda can help:
- Neutralize odor
- Balance PH
- Disrupt odor-causing bacteria
- Absorb excess moisture (without using aluminum)
All without blocking your body’s natural sweat process (win-win!).
But effectiveness alone isn’t enough. At Primally Pure, we believe the way ingredients are sourced and combined is just as important as what they do. That’s why we’ve spent years perfecting our baking soda formula to minimize irritation while maintaining its odor-fighting benefits.
How?
→ By sourcing high-quality, naturally mined, fine-grain baking soda. The softer texture is easier on the underarm skin and minimizes the risk of irritation compared with coarser, lower-quality alternatives.
→ By combining it in minimal (yet effective) amounts with a nourishing tallow base.
And while our careful sourcing and formulation make baking soda a non-issue for most, we also know everyone's body is different. That’s why we've always provided education and support for those with irritation or sensitivity. Still, we recognize that some are searching for an effective baking soda-free deodorant.
These conversations inspired us to go one step further. We decided it was time to create a completely baking soda-free deodorant. Designed for those in our community with ultra-sensitive underarm skin.
Our hope is that this new Baking Soda Free Deodorant provides a thoughtful alternative. And of course, still delivers the odor-fighting, skin-nourishing benefits of our original formula.

Primally Pure’s Baking Soda Free Deodorant
A deodorant without baking soda has been a long-requested product from our community. So, needless to say, we’re thrilled to finally drop all the details on our Baking Soda Free Deodorant. Formulated to provide the same long-lasting odor protection and nourishing skin benefits as our original formulas, this formula took time – and it delivers everything you've been asking for.
Our in-house formulator, Tommi, explains it best:
"We’ve been working on this baking soda-free deodorant for over a year. Our original formulas with baking soda are beloved because they truly fight odor, and the tallow base keeps underarms nourished and moisturized.
For this new version, we needed to find an effective alternative while making sure the deodorant felt soft on the skin and worked well in a stick format.
Taking the time to get all these details (and many more!) right is what intentional formulation is all about. Creating a product that’s gentle, effective, and dependable for everyone, even those with sensitive skin."
Here’s a closer look at the key ingredients that make our Baking Soda Free Deodorant so effective:
-
Magnesium – the star in our Baking Soda Free Deodorant. Sourced from the Dead Sea, we use a special blend of two magnesiums. Super gentle, they neutralize the acidic byproducts created by bacteria. This means it stops the development of odor before it even begins. ;) Here’s how Tommi explains this baking-soda alternative:
“We wanted to offer an alternative that provides long-lasting odor protection without the use of baking soda. This is it! The magnesium blend in these new deodorants has been shown through testing to reduce malodor by 40% after 24 hours of use. This is actually very similar to Aluminum products – without the obvious concerns.”
-
Tallow – this animal-based ingredient is a rich source of fatty acids. It deeply nourishes the skin barrier and helps to minimize any potential irritation.
-
Arrowroot Powder – a longtime ancestral and herbal remedy for skin concerns. It absorbs moisture, softens, and nourishes skin.
-
Coconut Oil – potent with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It moisturizes with fatty acids, eliminates odor-causing bacteria, and keeps skin calm and happy.
-
Beeswax – provides powerful anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties to protect + seal in moisture. (And of course, it’s ethically sourced.)
We also wanted to provide a mindful option for our sensitive-pit friends. That’s why our Baking Soda Free Deodorant comes in two versions:
→ Charcoal Deodorant, featuring a fresh blend of peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils, plus added detoxifying + deodorizing benefits from the activated charcoal content.
→ Unscented, free from essential oils for the most sensitive skin.

Regardless of which option you choose, making the switch to a non-toxic deodorant is a simple yet powerful step for your health. Say goodbye to toxic ingredients, fake fragrance, and sweat-blocking chemicals – for good.
