Tallow From Grass-Fed Cows: The Missing Link for Healthy Skin
For the last several decades, we’ve been told that fats (on our plates and in our skincare products in the form of oils) are bad.
Thankfully, that myth is well on its way out.
Healthy fats are actually beneficial AND essential when it comes to our overall health, starting at a cellular level.
One fat in particular, tallow (specifically from grass fed cows), is a game changer. Not only is beef tallow a healthy cooking fat, but it also acts as a topical superfood for the skin!
Tallow is an incredibly nourishing form of pure, rendered animal fat that’s quickly making a big comeback in skincare. Before the influx of man-made chemicals and unnatural substances in skincare, tallow was a prominent part of skincare products developed and used by our ancestors.
Our ancestors also ascribed to a nose-to-tail philosophy when it came to consuming animal products. Every part of the animal had a purpose, and nothing was wasted.
Used traditionally by our ancestors for centuries, grass-fed and finished tallow is a biocompatible superfood that contains:
- Anti-inflammatory conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) – an essential fatty acid that helps maintain moisture and protect from oxidative stress and other environmental stressors
- Antimicrobial palmitoleic acid – can provide UV protection, accelerate healing, promote collagen regeneration, and minimize signs of premature aging
- High concentrations of saturated fats – these closely match our cell membrane fat content, making it highly beneficial for the integrity and function of the skin
- Protective oleic acid – a non-essential fatty acid found in human sebum that balances the moisture barrier, regulates oil production and prevents free radical damage
Our tallow is also exclusively sourced from grass-fed and finished cows. This standard ensures the cows’ biologically appropriate diet and lifestyle support the most nutrient-dense beef tallow for skin.
Despite the sudden buzz around tallow, this is a true skin superfood that’s stood the test of time.
I hope this post helps to shed some light on why we use this unlikely (but incredibly transformative) ingredient in so many of our products! You’ll find grass-fed tallow in our Deodorants, Body Butters, Face Balms + Creams, Baby Balm and Lip Balms
