Oil Cleansing Mistakes You Might Be Making

Cleansing your skin with oil isn’t just a topic that’s trending, it’s truly the key to clean, balanced and healthy skin. Several skin issues people experience can be significantly improved by simply cleansing the skin properly. Because we’re such BIG believers in the power of the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM), we want to give you helpful tips on how to oil cleanse and troubleshoot the mistakes you might be making. Whether you have sensitive, combination, dry, aging, or even acne-prone skin, read on for simple cleansing tips for healthy + happy skin!

 

Wrong formulation for your skin.


 

You can find countless DIY cleansing oil recipes across Pinterest. However, it can be quite the process (and one that might take a toll on your poor skin!) to find the proper oil blend for your skin type. Oil cleansing works for all skin types when the correct oils + ratios are being used - and we’ve done the hard work for you. Our cleansing oil blends are based on copious amounts of research + trial and error to figure out which formulations are best for any given skin type. The blend that will work best for you will depend on your skin type (oily, normal, or dry) in addition to the climate in which you live. It all depends on what works best for you and YOUR skin.

 

 

Massage for at least a minute - or more.


 



This is when the cleansing oil really works its magic, dissolving build-up and nourishing the skin with powerful plant nutrients. Try to also think of this as a time to relax and massage away the stresses of the day — like a mini at-home spa treatment! Not only does this step feel so relaxing and help to stimulate circulation in the skin, this part is crucial for proper cleansing. Massage the cleansing oil onto dry skin for at least a minute - with upward + outward circular motions (working against gravity!). And pay special attention to problem areas, allowing the oil to dissolve makeup, impurities and sebum that have built up in your pores. Breathe and just enjoy - this time is for you.


 

Use a warm, wet (and clean!) washcloth.


 

Washcloths can harbor bacteria, so always use a clean cloth for cleansing. You don't want to defeat the purpose of deeply cleansing your skin by using a dirty towel! Soak your clean, organic cotton washcloth in super warm water - the steam will help bring dirt, debris, makeup and buildup to the surface of your skin. But beware! Scalding hot water can cause skin sensitivities or dehydration and tepid water won't soften your skin properly to pull out impurities.

Place the washcloth on your skin until the temperature cools - taking several deep breaths and soaking in the relaxing scent of essential oils. Allow the warmth to open your pores and draw out the dirt + grime to the surface of your skin. Gently wipe (don’t rub!) away impurities, excess oil + makeup and repeat that step with a steamed towel until your skin feels clean and smooth.

Similar to transitioning to natural deodorant, swapping out your conventional cleanser with a cleansing oil may take some time for your skin to adjust. Give it time, trust the process :) There is often a purging process (your skin may get worse for about a week or two) and we highly encourage you to stick it out. Keep in mind that it may take 2-3 weeks for your skin to fully adjust to this method of cleansing, as your complexion may need some time to fully detoxify from the build-up that has been residing comfortably in your pores up until now.
