Is Dry Brushing Right for Your Skin Type?

Dry brushing the face offers real benefits for most skin types, but it is not for everyone. Before adding it to your routine, consider the following guidance based on your skin's specific needs.

Who Should Approach Dry Brushing with Caution

Active acne or cystic breakouts: Dry brushing over active blemishes can spread bacteria and worsen inflammation. Wait until skin is calm and clear before resuming.

Rosacea: The friction of dry brushing can trigger flare-ups and increase redness. Consult a dermatologist before trying.

Eczema and psoriasis: Compromised skin barriers are easily irritated by bristles. Dry brushing is generally not recommended during active flare-ups.

Sunburned or recently treated skin: Never dry brush skin that is burned, freshly waxed, laser-treated, or chemically exfoliated. The skin barrier is too vulnerable to handle additional friction.

Very sensitive skin: Start with the softest possible pressure, once per week, and closely monitor your skin's response before increasing frequency.

For healthy, normal-to-oily skin types, dry brushing the face with a dedicated facial brush (never a body brush) and very light pressure is a gentle and effective addition to your weekly exfoliation routine.

What Is Dry Brushing Your Face?

Dry brushing your face is a gentle exfoliation technique that uses a soft-bristled brush to buff away dead skin cells, stimulate lymphatic drainage, and increase circulation. This reveals brighter, smoother skin in just a few minutes. Unlike body dry brushing, facial dry brushing requires a dedicated brush with ultra-fine, soft bristles to safely treat the delicate skin on your face without causing irritation. The practice has roots in ancient Ayurvedic tradition, where it was known as Garshana, and has been adopted by modern esthetics as a fast, effective, and chemical-free approach to facial exfoliation.

Dry Brushing FAQs

How should I clean my brush?

Depending on how often you’re dry brushing, we typically recommend washing your brush weekly with a gentle, non-toxic soap (like our seasonal Hand Soap or Branch Basics) and letting it dry with the bristles down so water doesn’t seep into the wooden handle.

Cleaning Tip: If you’re on the go or your brush needs a refresh in between washes, spritz bristles with our Hand Sanitizer.

Can I use the same brush for face and body?

For the sake of your skin, please don’t! This is why we offer two different dry brushes - one with softer 100% goat hair bristles for delicate facial skin and the other with more firm boar bristles for the body.

Their different sizes have also been specifically crafted to support smaller areas of the face + neck and larger areas on the body like the arms and legs. For best results from head to toe, incorporate both dry brushes for face + body into your beauty ritual.

What is it made of?

Our dry brushes are sustainably made with natural materials to support radiant skin and our planet’s resources.

Facial Dry Brush: Beechwood handle with soft 100% goat hair bristles.

Body Dry Brush: Bamboo wood handle with firm 100% boar bristles.
