Our Holistic Esthetician's Clear Skin Story

As an esthetician and skincare professional, you’re pretty much expected to have perfect skin.

During my early years working in the industry, I tried to attain this impossible ideal of perfect skin – from buying every cleanser + cosmetic available to trying to tan away my breakouts in a tanning bed to taking miracle acne pills.

After feeling defeated + disappointed after several failed attempts of creating clear skin that actually lasts, I came to realize that perfect skin is something you only see on magazine covers and airbrushed beauty ads (or these days, Instagram filters) – and that maybe my acne-clearing ways weren’t really as effective as I had thought.

My journey to clear, healthy skin has taken years – and it’s definitely still a work in progress. But the health of my skin has come a LONG way since my teenage, pimple popping, pore strip days.

I think first and foremost, it all began with a mindset shift – that I didn’t need to use aggressive treatments, harsh products or even hate the fact that I had acne.

The more I learned about the skin and how it truly is a reflection of our inner world + reveals imbalances within the body, I began to view my breakouts as an invitation to do some investigating – and inner healing.

And since I hadn’t seen any real results from mainstream products + professional skincare lines and couldn’t trust their clear skin promises anymore, I decided it was time to try something different.

After being in the beauty industry for years and being surrounded with skincare saturated with chemicals and false marketing claims, I came across this incredible non-toxic skincare company.

Yup, Primally Pure.

The minimal packaging + minimal ingredient lists hooked me immediately – and held up to their claims of helping to heal breakouts and create a healthy, smooth complexion. I quickly became a firm believer that real, recognizable ingredients really do provide results.

But, my complete clear skin story doesn’t end there.

While natural, non-toxic products did make a big difference in the health and clarity of my skin, I believe it had just as much to do with my diet + lifestyle shifts.

About 3 years ago, I gave up gluten, refined sugar and alcohol – cold turkey. It was definitely one of the craziest thing I had done to date.

I had known all about the negative effects that gluten + sugar had on my skin – I had visited naturopaths, read articles, and watched documentaries – and beautiful skin was a big deal to me.

So how could I continue to eat bread (my favorite food + daily staple) when I knew how gluten could cause issues with digestion and digestion is essential for gut health and gut health is essential for skin health? How could I keep treating myself to foods full of refined sugars when I knew sugar caused inflammation in the body and the skin? And how could I indulge in a glass of wine or pour a cocktail when I knew how alcohol actually contains both gluten AND sugar?

So I did it. And clearer skin isn’t the only benefit I’ve experienced. My body feels stronger, my mind is sharper, and my spirit feels more connected to myself, to others and to the world around me.

Once plagued with problematic breakouts, my skin is now consistently more smooth and clear. But even more important than just acne-free skin, I’ve become more confident in my own skin – who I am, inside and out.

And if a pimple appears again (which it does, and it will) I have a new mindset about beauty and know my identity doesn’t come from the state of my skin – which is the sweetest gift I’ve been given throughout my clear skin journey.
