Remembering Her
Today’s Reflection
What did you want to be when you were a little girl? Has any part of her influenced what you’re doing with your days as an adult? Do her heart, her hopes, her passions still fuel your path – or have her dreams been buried beneath decades and disappointments?
As we grow older, we often let childhood dreams fade. Not on purpose, priorities simply shift. The seeds that were planted in our early years stop receiving the tending-to they need to see the light of day.
Instead of watering what once made us come alive, we begin watering accomplishments and achievements.
Instead of shining light on what lit us up, we turn it toward the next step in our pursuit of success.
Instead of nourishing the soil where we naturally bloomed, we start feeding the expectations of others.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s good to grow up and become mature. We need to steward what we’ve been given and that can require sacrifice – sometimes even letting old dreams die so that new responsibilities can thrive.
And yet, I often wonder – where has that little girl gone? Just as it’s good to grow up, it’s equally vital to give her a voice as we do.
She was creative, she was outgoing, she was a go-getter. She loved horses, she hosted spa days in her basement, she started businesses. She made friends easily, she read endlessly, she loved fiercely.
In so many ways, I want to return to this little girl – to peel back the layers that have quieted her influence.
As we navigate this world of adulthood, may we also remember to return to her.
Today’s Ritual
This is an invitation to take inventory and to return to the little girl you once were – the one who loved without limits, dreamed without fear and saw beauty everywhere. Find a quiet space and allow these journal prompts to guide you in creating space for this little girl to shine her light once again.
What parts of your little girl do you remember?
What aspects of her do you want to bring back?
What do you need to release or rediscover to let her beauty be revealed again?
May today’s reflection be a reminder that you can lean into this little girl and let her innocence, vulnerability and beauty infuse who you are still becoming today.
