Just for today.
Today’s Reflection
Next year will mark a decade since I said goodbye to gluten, refined sugar and alcohol. When I first decided to give them up, I honestly had no end goal or rigid timeline in mind. It started as a simple daily decision, not a decade-long decision. And I deeply believe that’s how I can look back 10 years later, still living aligned with this divinely-inspired decision.
I wrote all about my first year reflections and then again 3 years later on The Pure Life Blog – unpacking this life-changing decision and the discoveries I made along the way. Now that I’m approaching 10 years, I’m reflecting yet again. This time, on the power of daily decisions. Just for today.
Because this was such a massive life change for me (pastries, ice cream and chardonnay all made regular appearances in my diet), I knew I needed to take it day by day. At that point, I probably couldn’t handle the idea of removing my favorite foods for forever, so I focused on “for now”. I told myself (and everyone else): Just for today.
That simple phrase carried me through endless dinner menus, gatherings and even the hard days. “No bun with my burger today.” “No wine for me tonight.” “I’m skipping dessert today.” And today became tomorrow. Then a week. Then a year. Now nearly ten.
Whether it’s stopping a habit or starting a new one, may we practice the powerful approach of “just for today”. While longterm vision is vital to flourishing, it can also sometimes feel overwhelming when we have a long way to go or a goal that seems so far out of reach.
Instead of thinking of a future fitness goal you want to hit, start by motivating yourself by saying: “Just for today, I’m going to do a workout.” Or if you’re struggling to stay consistent with your oil cleansing or gua sha – just for today, wash your face and follow through with a facial massage.
If there’s a change your soul is asking for, start with one day. Changing your life becomes much more manageable when you break it down, one day at a time. We can do anything when it’s just for today.
But the ripple effect a decade down the road? You’ll become unrecognizable in the best way possible. I’m living proof.

Today’s Ritual
Whether it’s your skincare ritual, your movement, your mindset or your meals, instead of getting caught in the distance between now and your goal, return to today. Practice these breath prayers and journal prompts to ground you into the present moment and motivate you to take the next right step, just for today.
Inhale: “Just for today…”
Exhale: “…I’ll follow through.”
Inhale: “Just for today…”
Exhale: “…I’ll have faith in the process.”
What is one small, nourishing choice I can make just for today?
Is there a habit I’ve been trying to shift that feels lighter when I take it one day at a time? What ripple effects might today’s small choices create in a year – or ten?
