After making a lifestyle change to almost 100% all organic items, this also applied to every single thing that I was putting on my body – including deodorant. For the past year, I have seen numerous articles circulate on the web discussing the topic of aluminum (the ingredient contained in most deodorants/anti-perspirants), and how it could possibly be linked to cancer. Initially, I subtly ignored it because I didn’t want to give up my Secret Sport Anti-Perspirant that had conveniently kept me dry all day long. Little did I know, it caused more harm than I ever thought. You have sweat glands for a reason, and I had been blocking them all these years. Long story short, I was seeking a better, healthier, organic deodorant (no longer an anti-perspirant) and wanted one that didn’t contain a ton of chemicals nor one that I couldn’t understand what the ingredients were. My biggest concern was keeping dry, and not having an obnoxious smell (I mean come on ladies who wants to smell?) I know that deodorants aren’t meant to keep you dry as anti-perspirants are, but can there be some sort of compromise? I began searching frantically up and down the Whole Foods aisles trying to find a decent deodorant for my new lifestyle and just ended up with a bunch of deodorants that really failed me. They either smelled bad, didn’t keep me dry, were super duper wet, or turned out weren’t that great for you either (many non-alluminum deodorants ironically contain parabens!)…Lovely.
Well I wanted to share with you a great line that I discovered and fell in love with! One day I was browsing some eco-friendly Instagram accounts when I came across this brand called Primally Pure. After reaching out to them, here are the items graciously provided for a review and that I’ve been using for a month:
Primally Pure Deodorant
This deodorant is amazeballs! Can I say that? I am so ecstatic over this deodorant – not only is it free from parabens, aluminum, and artificial ingredients but it actually works!! The smell is a lovely subtle lemongrass aroma. I love the texture of the deodorant, as it’s not slimy like most other non-aluminum deodorants. What else is awesome is the fact I don’t have to dip my fingers in it and get my hands all messy. That seems to be the trend with a lot of organic deodorants these days, but something about deodorant smeared on my fingertips to rub under my “pits” when I have two messy kids already…yeah that won’t work well for me. I also love the fact that my husband tells me I smell great. He makes a joke and takes a whiff in and says ahhhh lemongrass, but he quickly admits and states “no, I really do like the smell”. So it’s hubby approved too.
Primally Pure claims that their ingredients are so natural, that you can even eat some of them. Now, this isn’t a meal replacement folks but I did go ahead and performed a little taste test (I know I am weird) but it really did taste natural and didn’t make me want to gag. So, that’s a good thing and great to know there’s a product that believes it’s just as important what you put on your bodies as to what you put in them too. The ingredients to this deodorant consists of: organic extra virgin coconut oil, aluminum-free baking soda, organic arrowroot powder, tallow from grass-fed cows, organic beeswax, and organic lemongrass essential oil. I would totally give give it a try if I were you and can get one here!
Primally Pure Outdoor Lotion
Sunscreens these days also contain harmful chemicals. You should really do your research on which chemicals to stay away from and which harmful toxins are hiding in our everyday sunscreens. I love this organic lotion, as it’s not technically labeled as a sunscreen, but I can tell you that it’s currently 90 degrees where I live and heading outside and slabbing some of this stuff on my shoulders…has really provided me a natural alternative to all the other store bought chemically ridden choices. I can head outside for several hours, and I have sensitive Asian skin, and not get burned. I just reapply if I know I am directly in the heat for long durations. Some of the ingredients in this lotion have been known to provide protection from both UVA and UVB rays. The ingredients in this lotion contain: Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic Tallow from Grass-Fed Cows, Organic Mango Butter, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, Organic Beeswax, Organic Lavender and Peppermint Essential Oils.
Check out the buttery cream texture above in the outdoor lotion. Primally Pure sent the products in this cute recyclable newspaper packaging as well. Not only was it so smooth but it has an incredible peppermint smell. Very cool stuff!
Primally Pure Lip Balm
I am a frequent applier of lip balm that you could say I am almost a lip balm freak. I swear I am constantly rubbing lip balm on my lips all day. My problem for many years was that I was rubbing the wrong chapstick and lip balms that contained ingredients which ironically were making my lips more chapped. Did you know that most lip balms don’t actually add moisture? Funny huh? Well, to solve this problem of my constant need to rub it on 50 times a day is Primally Pure’s Organic Lip Balm. I tried the mint flavor, and adore the texture and the fresh smell. The ingredients in this lip balm contain: Organic Beeswax, Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Tallow from Grass-Fed Cows, Organic Mango Butter, Organic Essential Oils. I now only have to rub chapstick on twice a day
Overall, I am very pleased with this brand and will be using them again in the near future. I really wanted to emphasize that some of Primally Pure’s ingredients are Fair-Trade (which is awesome sauce), and you can view which ones specifically here on their site. Plus, one of Primally Pure’s main ingredients is Tallow – which is derived from the fat of grass-fed cows. Before you say ewww…..it’s buzzing as the latest craze for those on a paleo die, high in nutrients, easily absorbed and safe. Tallow also provides anti-inflammatory effects and has traditionally been used for soothing balms, cooking, candles and lubricants. You can take my word for it that it provides such a smooth buttery texture and it’s really quite pleasant.
